HOMAGE TO A HUMUMENT
by Keri Fitzgerald
"Homage to A Humument" is simultaneously poetry and visual art created using original and scanned book pages, scanned images, and acrylics. Fitzgerald uses an instructive text, The Ideal Woman, and a fictional one, Tess of the D’ubervilles, that characterize Victorian womanhood and give voices to women who ought to be long dead.
Acrylics on illustration board, original book page from Tess of the D’Ubervilles: A Pure Woman, and inkjet print of an illustration from The Ideal Woman (Hardy, Thomas. Tess of the D’ubervilles: A Pure Woman. New York: Signet Classics, 1980. Print.) (Melendy, Mary R. The Ideal Woman. E.E. Miller, 1915. Print.)
